By intentionally processing raw silk into a cotton-like state and then spinning the yarn using a cashmere-like method, an unprecedented quality is achieved, resulting in a soft and warm feel to the touch. I've always loved casually wrapping them over T-shirts and jackets, and I often check out specialized imported stole brands.
